Baghdad is Broken….Still

Posted: May 26, 2006 in Uncategorized

Over three years after Saddam’s regime was toppled, Baghdad is still in terrible shape. “Leaving aside security,” Kassim the carpet salesman asked rhetorically, “when you come home, what do you need?” He ticked off the answers on the fingers on his right hand: “Electricity. Water. Food.” “Getting any of this in Baghdad is a problem,” [...]

Gay, Blind, and Racist

I’ve long maintained that local news is a largely untapped spring of hilarity–Anchorman notwithstanding–and these two clips (One, Two) only serve to reinforce that idea. The first link is from The Corner.  The second one was given to me by JC a while back, but I just kept forgetting to post it.

They’re still finding unexploded ordnance from WWI and WWII in some very unusual places. From Reuters: Workers at a British factory making French fries were evacuated two days running last week after bomb parts turned up in potatoes imported from France and Belgium, the site of battles in World War One and Two. [….] Saturday, [...]

This is yet more proof that Tom Friedman can’t find his own ass, even though his head is actually in it. According to Friedman we are perpetually six months away from knowing if Iraq will turn into democratic paradise or if it was always destined to remain in the grip of authoritarianism and/or Islamism.  As [...]

….the stupid keep talking.  On Sunday morning, the debate over illegal immigration officially became pointless when Representative James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) uttered these words on Face the Nation: ….we shouldn’t be very sympathetic to employers who are hiring large numbers of illegal immigrants and paying them very low wages and exploiting them. Those folks are the [...]

From WBAL in Baltimore: Baltimore City police arrested a Virginia couple over the weekend after they asked an officer for directions. WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said Joshua Kelly and Llara Brook, of Chantilly, Va., got lost leaving an Orioles game on Saturday. Collins reported a city officer arrested them for trespassing on [...]

If this story is true, the Iraq war just got its My Lai. From CNN: A decorated Marine colonel turned anti-war congressman said Wednesday that Marines killed at least 30 innocent Iraqi civilians “in cold blood” in Haditha in November, suggesting the attack is twice as bad as originally reported. [….] “There was no firefight. [...]

Another clever movie trailer mashup, this time featuring The Ten Commandments as a stereotypical teen movie. Link from The Corner.

Pat Robertson has continued his unblemished record of bat-shit insanity by claiming that a tsunami might hit the United States this year: “If I heard the Lord right about 2006, the coasts of America will be lashed by storms,” Robertson said May 8. He added specifics in Wednesday’s show. “There well may be something as [...]

Somebody has made an online game about the Columbine school shootings and from the shooters’ points of view. (Whole story here.) The person who made the game claims that “he was in another Colorado high school when the shooting occurred,” and that “he was deeply marked by the killings,” which I grant is possible, but [...]
