What Tony Did

Posted: March 22, 2007 in Uncategorized

Tony La Russa, manager of the world champion Saint Louis Cardinals (I still really love writing that), was arrested early this morning in Jupiter, Florida for DWI.  He was actually passed out in his car, but he only blew a .093 on a breathalyzer test (Florida is a .08 state, but in some states the [...]

George Mason University economics professor Donald Boudreaux has an incredibly important editorial in the Christian Science Monitor on the incredible propensity to misuse or misread statistics when they are not viewed in the proper theoretical light and presented with the right contextualizing details. It bears extensive sampling: Statistics can also fool us when averages change [...]

Happy Birthday!

The Iraq War turns four today. If it were a toddler it would probably be toilet trained by now; Iraq, on the other hand, only seems to be regressing by the day. I fully expect this war to get considerably older before everything is said and done.

Remember how the government ostensibly invaded Iraq to prevent Saddam Hussein from giving weapons like chlorine gas to terrorists?  Guess what!?  Terrorists in Iraq are attacking people with chlorine gas.  Now, this is neither surprising nor particularly scary.  It is very easy to make chlorine gas–you can even make it at home by mixing ammonia [...]

What accounts for the large–and according to most commentators, growing–wealth disparity in the United States?  Well, a large part of it appears to depend on our behavior.  For instance, this essay describes the behavior of the average millionaire.   A sample: Dr. Stanley revealed that the typical millionaire spent less than $400 on their most [...]

A ninety-one year old German man had to be rescued by the police after accidentally gluing himself to a roof.  Whole story here.

Disturbing News of the Week

A six year old boy stayed in his apartment with his father’s dead body for two days because he was told not to leave without permission. From CNN: The boy, whose name was not released, didn’t want to leave even after firefighters arrived, fearing punishment if he left, fire department Maj. Noble Lee said. “He [...]
